Joinery is where experience becomes irreplaceable. A machine can cut a joint. How Are Upholstery and Finishes Applied?

Upholstery is the stage that most resists automation, and it remains genuinely skilled handwork. Fabric is cut with the pattern and grain direction planned across the whole piece, so that a repeat runs cleanly from the seat to the back rather than jumping awkwardly at a seam. Cutting badly here wastes material and produces a piece that looks subtly wrong without the viewer being able to say why.

Foam is shaped and layered rather than simply inserted. A seat cushion is usually built from more than one density, with a firmer core for support and a softer top layer for comfort, wrapped to give the cushion its shape and prevent the filling from migrating into corners. A finished piece is not ready to leave simply because it is finished. Proper inspection is a deliberate stage with its own checklist, and it is one of the last opportunities to catch a problem before it becomes yours.

  1. Structural check. The piece is loaded, rocked and levelled to confirm the frame holds geometry under real weight without flexing or creaking.
  2. Movement check. Every drawer, door and mechanism is cycled repeatedly to confirm smooth travel and consistent gaps rather than a single lucky opening.
