How to Measure for a Sofa That Fits Your Room and Your Delivery Route

A sofa can be the right colour, the right comfort and the wrong size. The most common measuring mistake is checking only the wall where it will sit. A successful delivery depends on the full journey from the vehicle to the final position, while a comfortable room depends on what happens around the sofa once it is in place.

Before you order, take two sets of measurements: one for the living space and one for the access route. Keep them with the exact product dimensions for the model and configuration you are considering.

Measure the room as a working space

Record the room width and length, then add every fixed feature to a simple sketch: doors, windows, radiators, fireplaces, sockets, built-in storage and any furniture that will remain. Measure the proposed sofa width, depth and height on the floor and wall using low-tack tape or flattened cardboard boxes.

Do not stop at the outline. Sit inside the taped area and check where your knees, side tables and coffee table would be. Open every nearby door and drawer. Walk the normal route through the room. A sofa that technically fits can still make a room awkward if it narrows the path between the entrance, television and dining area.

Use the exact configuration dimensions

A collection name is not a measurement. Two-seater, three-seater and modular versions can have very different widths and depths, while loose cushions may extend beyond the frame. Use the dimensions for the selected module or variant and ask for clarification if the page is incomplete.

For example, Atmacha currently lists the Baldera three-seater at 245 cm wide, 95 cm deep and 75 cm high. The Bonbona product page lists a 345 cm-wide three-seater and a 395 x 210 cm relax configuration. Those figures make them very different planning propositions even though both are sofas.

Check the delivery route from start to finish

Walk the route in the order the delivery team will use. Measure the narrowest clear opening, not the door leaf. Include the frame, handles, letterbox hardware and anything that cannot be removed. Then check hallways, corners, stair widths, bannisters, ceiling height, landings and the final room entrance.

At each turn, ask whether the sofa can rotate, tilt or stand on end without meeting the ceiling or a fixed object. Flats need extra checks for the communal entrance, lift door and lift interior. If access depends on removing a door or using another entrance, agree the responsibility and practical arrangements before delivery day.

Remember depth when choosing comfort

Deep seating can be excellent for relaxed evenings and taller sitters, but it also takes more floor space and may not support shorter users in an upright position. Test comfort in person where possible. Think about how the household sits: feet up, upright conversation, family film nights or occasional formal entertaining.

A sofa bed needs a second footprint when open. The Denis Sofa Bed page currently lists a 233 x 102 x 90 cm three-seater and an opened sleeping area of 185 x 145 cm for that version. Tape both rectangles on the floor and check whether the open bed blocks the door, a radiator or the route to the bathroom.

Plan modular furniture module by module

Modular sofas can solve difficult layouts because smaller sections may be easier to deliver and can be arranged around the room. They still need careful planning. List every module, confirm the orientation of arms and chaise sections, and draw the finished configuration to scale. Check whether future rearrangements will leave a useful layout rather than an orphaned module.

For larger households, generous modular seating can support everyday family time and frequent guests. The goal is not to maximise the number of seats at any cost. Keep a clear route through the space and ensure the people at the ends can still reach a table or place a drink safely.

Your sofa measurement checklist

  • Room width and length, including fixed features and door swings.
  • Sofa width, depth and height for the exact selected variant.
  • Seat depth and seat height for the way your household sits.
  • Narrowest doorway, hallway, stair, landing and lift measurements.
  • All corners where the sofa must tilt or rotate.
  • Open footprint for a sofa bed, recliner or chaise configuration.
  • Space for walking, side tables and other furniture after installation.
  • Delivery and assembly details confirmed with the retailer.

Measure twice then compare confidently

Good measurements turn a large furniture decision into a manageable shortlist. Photograph the access route, keep your sketch and dimensions on your phone, and bring them to the showroom or share them when asking for advice. Explore Atmacha sofas and chairs, then check the exact product page for the selected configuration before placing an order.
